The Design Museum

I was quite surprised when visiting Thetis exhibition to discover that the pieces which drew me in the most and sparked creative imagination was the textiles. Mainly pieces that has been repurposed, which I guess goes back to my love of vintage/antique, there’s an authenticity already present that a new item just doesn’t possess. History!

I particularly adored the concept of the piece above, mending a paper bag, something seen as disposable without use, yet with care and patience it can be reborn. The stagnant pieces look almost like naturally occurring rock formations, the natural hues ring out the theme of authenticity, hand crafted with learnt skill.

In past work Ive incorporated antique scraps/detailing/fabric but mainly just for decorative purposes, I found the exhibition led me to really think more about how much more there is to it, and how much more can be done in terms of good. So much more rewarding when the line extends past superficiality.

I’d really like to continue my exploration of upcycling, making treasure out of treasure. Looking for the value of certain things.

Image above showcasing a digital dress. Future of fashion! Also genius way to fix the social media influencer over consumption culture of fast fashion, one of a kind pieces of art that don’t destroy the planet. This was another sustainable route that not only blew my mind but was also something I could see myself wanting to trial out. It’s funny how much it contrasts to the first piece in terms of nature and authenticity etc, however its authentic in a sense that it does no harm, only good. There’s also a much broader freedom that comes to designing in this way, where there really are no limits in terms of material/silhouette to explore due to factors like technical skill and money not playing a role.
